You can perform quick searches for items by typing text in the Filter Box. The list of items is restricted to items whose name contains the filter text. Once a version database is built, it is significantly faster to type a portion of a program name in the Filter Box to determine the current version number than it is to use "Find File" in the finder, followed by a "Get Info" on the item found. Of course, both methods are faster than running the program to determine the current version.
You can also restrict the list to display Applications, Control Panels, Extensions, or Duplicate named items by choosing the appropriate item from the popup menu. This can also help narrow down the search for an item, as well as allow you to view all the version numbers for that particular type of item. Keep in mind that items with duplicate names are not always the "same" items. They can be different types (Application vs. Extension) or can be different files with the same name that belong to different applications.
